AVIF · up to 50 megapixels each · you can also paste

How to use

  1. Drag your .avif files onto the converter or click "Choose files".
  2. PNG is selected as the output; files convert as soon as they are added.
  3. Download the PNGs individually or all together as a ZIP.

Features

Alpha channel preserved
Transparent and semi-transparent areas in the AVIF are carried over exactly.
Lossless output
The decoded pixels are written to PNG without further compression loss, ideal for editing.
Works without AVIF support
AVIF is decoded with WebAssembly, so conversion works even where your system cannot open AVIF.
Private
Processing happens in your browser; files never leave your device.

Typical reasons to convert AVIF to PNG

Many AVIF files you come across are web graphics: logos, icons, product cut-outs, illustrations and stickers, often with transparent backgrounds. Websites serve them as AVIF because it is tiny. When you want to reuse such an image in a presentation, a document, a design tool or a video editor, AVIF support is hit-and-miss, and converting to JPG would replace the transparency with a solid colour. PNG keeps the transparent background and is understood by essentially every application.

PNG is also the right intermediate format if you plan to edit an image heavily. Lossless storage means you can open, adjust and save repeatedly without the image degrading.

How the conversion works

The AVIF file is decoded by libavif with the dav1d AV1 decoder, compiled to WebAssembly and running in a background Web Worker. The resulting pixels, including the alpha channel, are encoded as PNG. Images up to roughly six megapixels are optimised with oxipng, a lossless optimiser that finds a smaller encoding of exactly the same pixels; very large images use a faster encoder so that conversion stays quick. Your files are never uploaded.

Colour and bit depth

AVIF can store 10- and 12-bit colour and HDR. The PNG output is standard 8-bit sRGB, which is what screens, browsers and most software expect. For typical web graphics and photos this conversion is visually transparent; images authored specifically for HDR displays will lose their extended brightness range.

Keeping files manageable

If the resulting PNG is too large for your needs and you do not need transparency, AVIF to JPG produces a much smaller file. If you need transparency but also small files, PNG to WebP afterwards gives you a compact, widely supported alternative.

Batch conversion

You can drop a whole folder of AVIF files at once. They are decoded in parallel across background threads, each file shows its own progress, and the finished PNGs can be downloaded together in a single ZIP archive.

Frequently asked questions

Should I convert AVIF to PNG or JPG?

PNG if the image has transparency, is a graphic or logo, or you want a lossless copy for editing. JPG if it is a photo and you want a smaller, universally accepted file.

Why is the PNG so much larger than the AVIF?

AVIF is one of the most efficient lossy formats available, while PNG is lossless. For photos, the PNG can easily be ten times larger. For flat graphics the difference is smaller.

Does the conversion restore quality lost in the AVIF?

No. Any detail discarded when the AVIF was created is gone. Converting to PNG simply guarantees no further loss.

Are animated AVIF files supported?

The first frame of an image sequence is converted. Animated AVIF is rare; most AVIF files are single images.
