India’s new passport photo format
India’s Passport Seva has adopted photo guidelines based on the ICAO standard used for machine-readable passports worldwide. The photo must be in colour with dimensions of 630 × 810 pixels, a close-up of the head and top of the shoulders in which the face takes up 80 to 85 percent of the photograph. That is a noticeably bigger face than in the older square format, so photos cropped for the previous rules often show too much background.
The background must be white, and the photo must show the full head from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, centred and not tilted. You must look directly at the camera with eyes open and mouth closed, natural skin tones, and appropriate brightness and contrast. There must be no hair across the eyes, no shadows or flash reflections on the face and no red eye. Glasses should be taken off to avoid reflections. Head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons, and the face from chin to forehead and both edges of the face must remain visible.
How to take the photo
The guidelines recommend taking the photo from about 1.5 metres away, so the face is not distorted. Stand in front of a plain white wall, a little away from it, facing a window for even daylight. Ask someone else to hold the phone at your eye level and take the picture with the main camera, then frame it in the tool so your crown touches the blue line and your chin falls inside the green band.
Uploading on Passport Seva
When the portal asks for your photograph, upload the 630 × 810 pixel digital photo. It is a high-quality JPG; if the portal shows a maximum file size that the photo exceeds, use the image compressor with a KB target, which keeps the 630 × 810 dimensions. The print sheet places 35 × 45 mm copies on a standard 4 × 6 inch photo print for any office that asks for physical photos.
