The Schengen visa photo format
A Schengen visa is valid for all countries of the Schengen Area, and the photo requirements are harmonised as well: a recent colour photo, 35 mm wide and 45 mm high, following the ICAO guidelines for biometric passport photos. The face should take up 70 to 80 percent of the photo’s height, which on a 45 mm photo means 32 to 36 mm from the chin to the top of the head.
The photo must show your full face, looking straight at the camera with a neutral expression and mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible. Sunglasses are not allowed, and head coverings only for religious or medical reasons, as long as the face from chin to forehead stays visible. The background must be plain and light, with no shadows, objects or other people. Wear everyday clothes.
Your visa photo is compared with your passport and, under the EU’s Entry/Exit System, with the facial image taken at the border, so a clear, recent and well-lit photo matters.
Applying through an embassy or VFS centre
Most applications are handed in at a consulate or an external service provider such as VFS Global or TLScontact, where you bring one printed photo along with the application form. Download the print sheet and print it as a standard 4 × 6 inch or 10 × 15 cm photo – no scaling or cropping – then cut out one photo along the grey lines. Glue or staple it as instructed on the form.
Some countries’ online application portals ask for a digital photo instead. Use the digital photo, a 1050 × 1350 pixel JPG; if a portal sets a lower file size limit, reduce it with the image compressor using a target size.
Taking the photo yourself
Stand about a metre in front of a light wall, facing a window, so your shadow falls behind you. Have someone else take the photo from about 1.5 metres away at your eye level. Frame it in the tool with the crown on the blue line and the chin inside the green band, keeping the nose on the centre line.
